Inviting hard questions \ Anthropic

Announcements Inviting hard questions Jul 9, 2026 Who decides the rules for AI? Can AI give my children a better future? Does AI make the world a more dangerous place? Can AI help scientists cure diseases? People have a lot of hard questions about AI. It's our job to address them. Many people are positively disposed to AI. They already use it every day, and they see its potential for making our work and our lives less laborious, for changing the way we learn, for helping speed up scientific and technological progress, for creating new sources of prosperity, and for solving some of the biggest medical and social problems we face. But many also hold serious concerns. Some are worriedsource:Anthropic

Redeploying Claude Fable 5 \ Anthropic

Announcements Redeploying Fable 5 Jun 30, 2026 Update Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 redeployed Jul 1, 2026 Access to Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 is now restored. On Friday, June 12, the US government applied export controls to our newest models, Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5. This required us to restrict access to foreign nationals, whether inside or outside the United States. Because the order took effect immediately and we had no reliable way to verify nationality in real-time, we suspended access to both models for all users. As of today, June 30, the export controls on Fable 5 and Mythos 5 have been lifted . Fable 5 will be available starting tomorrow, Wednesday, July 1,source:Anthropic

How Claude's text watermarking works \ Anthropic

Announcements How Claude's text watermark works Aug 14, 2026 Future Claude models will generate text that contains a watermark. This is a way of determining the likelihood that Claude was involved in writing the text, and we, along with several other major AI providers, are implementing this change to comply with the EU AI Act. In this article, we share answers to some of the questions we've received about how our chosen watermarking method works, whether it affects Claude's outputs, and why we're making this change. To summarize: We use a method of watermarking that does not have any practical impact on the quality or content of Claude's outputs; The difference between watermarked and un-watermarked text will not be distinguishablesource:Anthropic

Improving Fable 5 Safeguards \ Anthropic

Product Announcements Improving Fable 5's biology safeguards Aug 7, 2026 We're making updates to Claude Fable 5's biology safeguards in a way that substantially reduces false positives. Fable 5 users will now experience many fewer "fallbacks"-where the system switches to a less capable model after they make a biology-related query. In our testing, this update reduced biology-related fallbacks by about 85% across our product surfaces. 1 Fable 5 will thus be able to assist with a wider range of biology tasks. In practice, users should see far fewer fallbacks on everyday health and educational questions-for example, interpreting lab results, understanding symptoms, and learning about biology in an educational context. Healthcare professionals will be able to receive more support from Fablesource:Anthropic

Mark Zuckerberg has an Instagzam

Instagram's wordmark is iconic. Well, was iconic. Apparently Instagram thought it looked old, so the company rolled out a new one this week. It doesn't look like the old Instagram wordmark. It doesn't even look like it spells Instagram anymore. And we cannot figure out why Instagram decided to do this. On this episode of […]source:The Verge

Google will now allow you to remove visible watermarks from the images, videos, and music made with AI tools. With the update, you can toggle off a new "Media watermark" setting in Gemini and Google's AI video generator, Flow. When toggled off, Google will remove the "sparkle" watermark that appears in the bottom-right corner of […]source:The Verge

Does Mark Zuckerberg really believe AI is 'for everyone'?

Meta released Glimmer this week, an open-weight AI model anyone can download and run on their own hardware – a contrast to Muse Spark, the company's more powerful model that stays locked behind its own APIs. The release landed alongside a letter from Mark Zuckerberg arguing AI should be "for everyone" rather than controlled by a handful of labs, but as Equity's […]source:TechCrunch

Position: Reasoning is a Learnable Rule

arXiv:2608.12325v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Autonomous reasoning is among the most scientifically and economically motivating topics in AI today. Historically the purview of symbolic AI, recent advances have mainly emerged from deep probabilistic generative models. Despite immense interest and rapid progress, the generative AI community has not clearly converged on operational definitions for reasoning and often implicitly rejects the historical treatment of this topic in logic and verifiable automated reasoning. This position contends that definitional ambiguity leaves the construct validity of reasoning evaluation unverifiable, undermining quantifiable progress toward trustworthy autonomous reasoning. We also contend that this ambiguity is addressable. To that end, we provide (1) operational definitions based on a synthesis of the literature, positioning valid and sound reasoning assource:arXiv

Diagnostic Foundation for Evaluating LLMs' Research Integrity as Co

arXiv:2608.12345v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Language models are increasingly deployed as co-scientists, yet their ability to uphold research integrity under institutional pressure remains unmeasured. We introduce IntegrityBench, a benchmark evaluating misconduct classification, ethical action reasoning and artifact-grounded decision making across 36 paired tasks under a 5-level implicit-explicit pressure protocol spanning 3 domains and 4 research stages. Evaluating 18 frontier model variants, we find that under peak pressure, models fail roughly 1 in 3 integrity-critical decisions, and neither scale nor reasoning ability reliably mitigates this. Explicit pressures induce compliance with misconduct, while implicit contextual reframing more often causes over-refusal of legitimate research tasks. Interestingly, models failing to classify research requests accurately perform equally or better on artifact-grounded decision making (85.7 vs.source:arXiv

Position: The Alignment Community is Unintentionally Building a Censor's Toolkit

arXiv:2608.12346v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: This position paper argues that modern AI alignment methods – originally designed to prevent harmful output – are dual-use technologies that may easily be misused by malicious actors for censorship and manipulation. By mapping current alignment techniques to the possibility and actual cases of misuse, we show that the quest for a "perfectly aligned" model inadvertently also provides malicious actors with an ever-improving tool for informational dominance. We need to discuss this dual-use potential now, as its risk is exacerbated by rapid user adoption of AI as information provider, economic power asymmetries, and a political landscape that increasingly shifts towards authoritarianism. We conclude by urging the community to consider the intentional misuse of AI alignmentsource:arXiv

Introducing Claude Opus 5 \ Anthropic

Product Announcements Introducing Claude Opus 5 Jul 24, 2026 Claude Opus 5 is available today. It's a thoughtful and proactive model that comes close to the frontier intelligence of Claude Fable 5 at half the price. On coding and knowledge work evaluations like Frontier-Bench and GDPval-AA , Opus 5 is the new state-of-the-art, though it remains behind Mythos 5 on cybersecurity tasks. Opus 5 is designed to be used every day: it works more efficiently than other models. It's the new default model on Claude Max, and the strongest model on Claude Pro. Performance and cost-effectiveness Claude Opus 5 provides greatly improved performance for the same cost as its predecessor, Opus 4.8. The charts in this section show how performancesource:Anthropic

Introducing Claude Sonnet 5 \ Anthropic

Product Introducing Claude Sonnet 5 Jun 30, 2026 Claude Sonnet 5 is built to be the most agentic Sonnet model yet. It can make plans, use tools like browsers and terminals, and run autonomously at a level that, just a few months ago, required larger and more expensive models. For many developers, the agentic AI era began with Sonnet-class models: Claude Sonnet 3.5, 3.6, and 3.7 were the first models that showed impressive skills in coding and tool use. More recently, though, the clearest gains in agentic capabilities have been in our Opus-class models. Sonnet 5 narrows the gap: its performance is close to that of Opus 4.8, but at lower prices. It's a substantial improvement over its predecessor, Sonnetsource:Anthropic
